Understanding the relationship between individual characteristics and learning processes is essential for any educator. It allows him to provide the most effective learning strategy to maximize comprehension, retention, and application of the things that are taught in the educational setting. However, one of the main problems that culturally-diverse students face is retention. In line with this, there are many theories as to how cultural differences could lead to varying retention (and learning) rates, such as the cultural difference theory, expectation theory, and cultural deficit theory, to name a few. Simply said, all of these theories posit that since culturally-diverse students are placed under higher pressure yet lack the cultural and linguistic background to adapt to the learning environment, retention of their learnings is also limited  (Lynch, 2016).
