In chapter one of her book, Tatum (1997) quotes and expounds on David Wellman’s definition of racism: “a system of advantage based on race.” I found the definition important because it not only conveys the meaning of the term but it also provokes one to think about the ‘advantage’ associated with it. I think that when racism is defined as discrimination or prejudice, its gravity reduces. However, terming it a ‘system of advantage’ conveys the gravity of the situation well.
