The article Realizing Opportunities for English Learners in the Common Core English Language Arts and Disciplinary Literacy Standards presents various recommendations to English learners globally (C. Bunch, Kibler & Pimente, 2018). The main aims of these recommendations are to help them develop their learning skills in various disciplines. According to the article, “The use and development of oral language are particularly important at the beginning stage, as it serves as one foundation that students use to build early reading skills” (C. Bunch, Kibler & Pimente, 2018, pg. 3). In my current classroom, we have embraced this recommendation. Our teachers work hard each day, developing our oral language in various ways, such as expanding our knowledge on different types of structured texts.
In the future, I would like our classroom to implement the article recommendation that nurtures student speaking and listening skills. According to the article, “Effective listening comprehension also requires the use of strategies, such as focusing on relevant parts of a message, making predictions, and monitoring one's comprehension” (C. Bunch, Kibler & Pimente, 2018, pg. 7).
