We need our memory to bind our thoughts, experiences, and emotions together. The functioning of the memory relies on several brain cells. For students, it is important that they have sharp memories to aid their learning. Students that have memory deficits would have specific learning disabilities. There are several characteristics to memory deficits. The first of them is the inability to remember what they have been shown, what they heard or even what they saw (Mammarella et al., 2015). Additionally, they would have a weak pronunciation and spelling. They would also have difficulties memorizing speeches, facts, etc. The people would often appear to be always forgetful, and they never learn from their mistakes (Wiguna et al., 2012). For this reason, they would often appear to repeat the same errors over and over again. Even the tasks that they are familiar with, they would often take longer to accomplish them. They would have several changes in mood and behavior for unexplained reasons. The characteristics vary. While some of these characteristics are not too severe, others may require immediate medical help because they could be a sign of dementia.
Memory deficit, whether long-term or short-term can affect learning in several ways. First, a person can have more inability in their brains to integrate new knowledge or skills (Mammarella et al., 2015). For this reason, they may have less ability to follow the instructions that are given to them. They may also be unable to organize their thoughts so that they can write and speak effectively. Most importantly, they may not be able to organize information that is given to them quickly. A person that has memory deficits will lack self-confidence, and they might also have gaps in skills that may make it difficult for them to learn new things (Moreau & Waldie, 2016). The students may feel incompetent and inadequate in their ability to learn new things, and this might affect their learning process greatly. Even if students can learn, they will not be able to recall what they learned previously. It is important in learning for students to be able to remember what they learned in the past in the right order and sequence. When presented with new materials to learn, the people with memory deficit would often be disorganized, disoriented or even confused (Moreau & Waldie, 2016). The most serious consequence is the inability of the people affected to remember the order of appearance of syllables in a word.
