Learning Based on Different Perspectives
Learning is an integral part of human life and has existed since time immemorial, and there are various types of learning techniques the world over. Some are rigid and follow an unchanging pattern, while others are flexible. In recent times, many education systems are embracing flexible learning techniques because they are more interactive and yield optimal results. This paper explores some of those flexible learning techniques and their impact as learned from chapters 11, 20, and 21 of the book by Mayer and Alexander (2017).
What I Have Learned
This week, I have learned about three interesting learning techniques which have helped me generate a different perspective on learning and teaching. First, I have learned about how teachers can assist students to self-monitor and self-regulate. In this technique, for learners to achieve desired objectives, they learn to monitor and control their cognitions, motivations, and behaviors (Veenman, 2017). The technique involves setting goals, exercising control through different strategies, and monitoring progress through reflection. In a word, the method enables learners to convert their thoughts into learning skills by managing and organizing them.
Further, I learned about discussion-based instruction, which is holding conversations and exchanging thoughts and ideas between learners and teachers. An optimal discussion triggers critical thinking and fosters problem-solving, learning, comprehension, and literary appreciation (Murphy et al., 2017). As such, discussions enhance comprehension of content and reading ability. Additionally, it helps scale up writing and reading scores. This is because it allows learners to participate actively.
