According to Kendi (2019), a racist policy is any formulated and implemented measure that sustains or produces racial inequality between two or several racial groups (Chapter 1, 18). He says, by stating policy, he means both written and unwritten laws, rules, regulations, or procedures that direct people how they should behave or work. He adds that these racial policies have racist ideas, which suggest that one group should be superior or inferior to the other. Thus, such ideas and policies support racial inequality in society. Racism has encroached education systems across different countries and has led to policies that support racist ideas.
An example of a racist policy in most education systems in the world, based on Kendi’s explanation above, is that students from the Islam community should wear hijabs at school. Islam students maintain their unique dress code, and one can distinguish them even when they are in a gathering. This policy supports a racist idea because students from other religions may view these Islam students that are different from the others. When it comes to discussion groups in class or sitting arrangements, one may realize Islam students sit in a specific position or a group such a way that they do not involve themselves with others.
