Phonics and reading are the foundation for education (Alonso, 2013). Additionally, teachers must make sure every pupil masters the ability read. However, literacy begins as early as at birth, and thus efforts should be made at a very early (Katz & Kim, 2016). However, at this digital age, things are made easier by the availability of several tremendous interactive websites for reading lessons. This paper examines six interactive reading websites that can be useful for 3-12th-grade children by focusing on the usefulness of the sites on grade 4 pupils.
The ICTgames, a fun phonics website, explores children’s reading process using games. The website is geared towards the PK-2nd. Additionally, this site has more than 35 games that cover several literacy topics. The games are intellectual, and the children use clever strategy to beat others through letter matching and word building among others (Katz & Kim, 2016). The games are fun and engaging as they are centered on planes, dragons, dinosaurs, and rockets. They also improve reaction times and quick thinking of the students as they include the component of a mathematics game. However, the games take a lot of time that could be spent doing some other productive work (Ferdig & Pytash, 2014). The games also use wrist, eyes, and thumbs constantly which could lead to other complications like eye strain among others. Lastly, on a 5-star scale, the site qualifies for a 3/ 5 on special effects, 5/5 on ease of website, 5/5 on overall enjoyment, and 5/5 on fulfilling educational goals.
The PBS Kids is an exceptional website that promotes reading and phonics in an entertainingly and interactively way. This site features every educational program offered by PBS TV for kids. Additionally, each program contains a different game and activity skill sets. They also include diverse learning tools that address all alphabetic principle learning aspects like letter names, sounds, and alphabet order. This site also provides spelling, thinking, and reading component. However, using PBS Kids could prove to be a challenge because it gives so much to choose from and it involves PBS TV compromises further the awkward relationship with the media (Ferdig & Pytash, 2014). The site is versatile and coupled with game-like interface thus earning a 4/5 rating on special effects, 5/5 on ease of use as it can be used on a single or multiple computers. The site deserves a 5/5 on overall enjoyment as it uses children favorites like “Curious George” and “Dinosaur Train,” and 4/5 on fulfilling educational goals as it is certified smart/white board-compatible, a comprehensive tool for elementary classes.
