Becoming a Scholar-Practitioner
Scholarship refers to the set of practices employed by scholars and academicians to make scientific claims about a subject as valid as possible. These scholars use scientific methods of investigation to back their claims. Such scientific methods seek to ask a question on a specific area of study, search past literature for general information about the area, construct and test hypotheses, collect and analyze data, and draw conclusions based on the research and data analysis results. Scholarly practice, however, encompasses a planned and reflective approach to problem-solving that is focused on commitment to the well-being of clients, the learning of new ways of effectiveness and efficiency, and the conceptualization of their research in relation to the broader organizational, community, and cultural levels (McClintock, 2003). According to Horn (2002), a scholar-practitioner is an individual who desires to achieve an intimate and much deeper understanding of their field of practice and seeks to bridge the gap between theory, learning, and practice.
While the research focuses primarily on conceptual problems and seeks to add to a larger body of knowledge, the scholarly practice focuses on practical issues. It aims to generate results from analyzing data and applying these results to solve practical and real-world issues. Research refers to the systematic study of scientific material to establish new facts and reach specific conclusions based on study results. Research is mainly driven by the need to find generalized findings and enhance the development of theoretical ideas in the respective field of study. Scholarly practice is a much more advanced educational and operational model of professional excellence driven by personal values, ethical conduct, and commitment (McClintock, 2003).
