The Importance of Trust in Leadership
The significance of trust in leadership cannot be understated. Mistrust in the organization increases employee turnover and failure to volunteer for various ideas. Also, a lack of trust motivates employees to undermine their leaders’ decisions and question each move made by a leader. Trust in leadership results in breakthroughs in organizations. Trusted leaders will always motivate their employees to share their opinions and ideas, even those differing from their leaders. As a result, leaders are exposed to multiple perspectives since employees are not afraid to express themselves. Trust in leadership motivates employees to change their habits, thus playing a pivotal role in implementing change and enhancing workers’ performance (Blanchard, 2013). It also promotes team performance by increasing loyalty and productivity. Mistrust in leadership results in difficulties in decision making and acknowledging mistakes due to the negative results associated with admitting individual mistakes. On the flip side, workers can seek guidance and support without fear in leadership with trust.
Additionally, trust in leadership helps in controlling damage. Mistrust creates a fearful environment where employees delay admitting their mistakes, often resulting in more issues than when the problems had been communicated earlier. Employees in a trustful environment are not afraid to admit mistakes and present solutions on the table. As a result, the fallout of an error is limited, and employees can use the mistake as an opportunity to learn. Trust symbolizes outstanding leadership. One of the main bases of exceptional leadership is displaying behaviors and features that attract respect and trust from others (Blanchard, 2013).
