ECS 110 Chapter 2 Forum: Article and Your Own Experiences

Essay Instructions:

Section 1:
Respond to two of these questions. Then respond to two of your classmates posts.
Drawing on the article and your own experiences, why do you think (most) teachers are not prepared to teach 'non-mainstream' students?
What does it mean (as Delpit says) "to really see, to really know the students we must teach?" (P. 36). What are the challenges to being able to do so?
How might "critical autobiography" prepare teachers to 'see culture' and to teach in culturally diverse schools? What limitations do you see to this approach?
Finally, consider your self. Where in the article do you see your self, your voice, your response to difference represented?

How do you see the guidelines put forward by Sensoy and DiAngelo as being helpful to you? To our class? Which do you think are the most helpful?
How do you see the guidelines as being challenging for you? Which guideline(s) or suggestion(s) do you see as being most challenging? How so?

ECS 110 - CHAPTER 2 FORUM Name Institution Date   Section 1 Drawing on the article and your own experiences, why do you think (most) teachers are not prepared to teach 'non-mainstream' students?             Many teachers are unprepared to teach ‘non-mainstream’ students since they have been exposed to mainstream context that they find it difficult to engage and know students. Now more than ever before, the Western societies are diverse, and there are informal cultural aspects that may not be apparent when the teachers first engage with ‘non-mainstream’ students. As such since the teachers do not share the same linguistic and cultural backgrounds as the ‘non- mainstream’ students, they would need more time to understand different aspects of the students’ lives. Teachers also tend to simplify and generalize traits assuming that they are fixed and stable, but there is a risk of focusing on cultural subjectivities and ignoring the complexities of culture.  Even as teachers are expected to reflect on the complexities of multicultural education settings, but even the supervisors and fellow students stereotype the non-mainstream students. What does it mean (as Delpit says) "to really see, to really know the students we must teach?" (P. 36). What are the challenges to being able to do so?             To Delpit teachers need to understand who they are and what the students know and then building upon this since teachers are likely to identify how the students learn best. Besides the cultural curricula, the informal, home environment and lived experiences of the students influence how they learn. Aspects that shape the students learning are also factors that are outside the school system including cultural values and practices. Teachers face challenges to understand what is unfamiliar to them, and then understand how culturally relevant learning meets their needs. Given the complexity of understanding each studen...
