The importance of student-directed sharing time for literacy development.
Student-directed sharing time is essential for literacy development. It enables students to decide the focus of the content to share, facilitating their learning skills and concepts vital for literacy development. For instance, when sharing what they have learned in class, students may want to explore personal stories or interests, thereby showcasing comprehension of new words and language. It gives students the flexibility to utilize different ways of processing and sharing what they have learned since the learning plan is tailored to each student (Garrels, 2019, pp. 197-198). Additionally, it helps the students to monitor their progress and determine what literacy skills they have acquired so far and what they do not know. Hence, a teacher can effectively guide them through other learning strategies.
