Unit I: Exploring Mediated Values
Project 1: Mediated Values Essay
Prompt
Construct an essay that informs your audience (your teachers and classmates) about how a specific
piece of media (e.g., a book, a movie, a television show, a song, an album, a magazine, etc.) has shaped
a value you hold. Use your personal experiences with this media to explain how that media has shaped
your understanding of this value and how it is shared with others.
Further Explanation
This prompt asks you to reflect on how one of your values has been shaped or formed through your
experiences with a particular piece of media. Our goal, then, is to consider critically where our values
and beliefs come from or how they are shaped. You should identify, analyze, and communicate how
your personal experience with this piece of media has shaped the specific value you are discussing. The
more focused and specific your discussion, the better. (For example, some values are so broad that they
can become muddled and nearly meaningless, like freedom; a better approach to freedom might focus
more specifically on a type or aspect of freedom, like the ability to make decisions about one’s own body
or the ability to challenge an authority figure.)
The style, tone, and organization of this essay is largely up to you, as long as it is guided by a discussion
of how a specific piece of media or text has shaped a value you hold. For example, you might deploy
personal narrative and then reflect on that experience, or you might discuss a particular text or piece of
media and analyze it, then move into your experiences. This essay is not a review of the text or media
you’re discussing, nor is it a recommendation (so, your goal isn’t to evaluate the text like a movie review
does). Rather, you might think of this project as sharing an experience with a text or media and a
reflection on that experience.
Importantly, this essay should avoid surface-level observations. Instead, this project should involve in depth reflection.
Minimum Expectations & Guidelines
Your essay should conform to these guidelines:
• Be a minimum of 500 words
• Be written in a readable, 11–12 pt. font
• Have a title that is inviting to your readers (your classmates)
• Identify and discuss a specific piece of media important to you
• Identify and discuss a specific value you hold that this media has helped to shape
• Use specific details, including personal experiences, to explore the relationship between this
media and this value
• Show a degree of analysis (that is, it does not just describe, but reflects on and analyzes your
experiences or the media you’re discussing)
• Be effectively organized, use clear language, and be carefully edited
This essay will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. On-time submission of a satisfactory essay that meets

Talladega Nights Movies Shapes a Core Value of Winning
For many audiences watching the movie ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballard of Ricky Bobby’, it might be all about NASCAR and racing. I feel the movie has critically shaped one of my greatest values: winning. Some movie critics may regard the film as an embodiment of the American spirit and culture where the winner takes. The story of Ricky may show ups and downs, but I believe the main message is that winning is important in a person’s life. One can only make it in life if one is winning. Similarly, life can take a turn for the worst if one is no longer winning. This is the idea manifested when Ricky is dumped by the wealthy man owning his racing team in favor of another driver, Jean, who shows better prospects. I have selected the Talladega Nights movie because it shows people determined to always emerge winners.
Finishing in the first place is an amazing feeling and experience, especially considering the benefits gained in the process. For example, Ricky's winning record has resulted in multiple corporate sponsors and endorsement deals. Additionally, he also enjoys a large house and a driveway packed with boats and cars. In my opinion, winning should just be for the sake of it. there might be a good feeling when one wins, but winning should also present significant rewards. If Ricky just wins and continues to live a normal life, then I could consider all the efforts to be wasted. The idea of winner...
