The researcher applied a qualitative descriptive method of study. I believe that the qualitative research method was appropriate for the given subject matter, considering that the research tried to hone in on the modal shifts of leadership practices coming from K-12 principles during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher used interviews with experts and current K-12 public school principals, with the analysis of extant documentation reflecting the planning and communication of leaders over the adjustment to the pandemic. I based my decision on the appropriateness of the research methodology relates to the study’s research problem and research design. The study sought to understand the attitudes, experiences, and perceptions of school leaders on administration practices, in the face of the widespread shift to remote learning as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic. Interviews are the most effective data collection tool when gathering people’s understandings and insights on a research subject.
They are designed to gather a richer and more comprehensive source of information from a selected group of informative subjects about attributes, feelings, opinions, behavior, preferences, knowledge, and attitudes (Virginia Tech, 2018). Besides, the study used a descriptive design and therefore a data collection tool that allowed the probing and exploration of research subjects’ behaviors, opinions, phenomena, and experiences was appropriate. On the whole, a qualitative research design was suitable for collecting in-depth information as opposed to the quantitative research design, which focuses more on statistics and logic (Young et al., 2018). I further believe that the qualitative method is appropriate to the study and its framework since it is a leadership model which is being looked into. Qualitative research relies on non-numerical data obtained through interviews, observation, focus-group discussion, questionnaires, and surveys. On the other hand, a quantitative method focuses on numerical data and the systemic measurement of variables to test different hypotheses.
While a quantitative method may indeed be employed with regards to the given subject matter in the study, a qualitative method is admittedly more appropriate since it seeks to explain in detail how leadership in a school setting changed and responded to the challenges during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as but not limited to, the suspension of face-to-face classes, staff vaccination, online and distance learning, and the like.
