Ethical Dilemma
Ethics is a system of principles for conduct that guides individuals in determining how they should act in various circumstances (Oliver & Hioco,2012). In some ways, it may be said that ethics is all about making decisions and presenting justifications for those decisions. It is sometimes mixed up with other forms of making decisions, such as religion, morality, or the law (Brunone & Marlow, 2013). Based on these conflations, ethical decision-making theories premise and the varied approaches emerge. This paper examines an ethical decision-making dilemma scenario as faced by an individual.
Working in community organizations is one of the most challenging professions. It becomes more difficult if one works in a remote area, where individuals engage in cultural practices that might hinder development or negatively affect the well-being of other individuals. I interviewed a community worker who faced the dilemma of reporting child abuse in the form of an arranged early marriage of a young teenage girl. Her organization works with needy families and protects young girls from various forms of abuse. The organization also ensures that the young girls in their care access basic amenities like education and health. The young girl never had the chance to complete her schooling because her parents were poor. She was forced to drop out of school to pursue marriage to support her parents through bride price. She also sacrificed her schooling at the expense of her younger siblings, who were staring at a bleak future. Despite knowing the reasons behind the arranged early marriage, my respondent was torn between reporting the case and letting it pass. She said it is based on her ethical and moral beliefs. She opined that the girl had a right to a better future and that her parents never explored all the possible avenues.
