Wheeler and Richey (2014) indicate that prior to teaching a positive replacement behavior, educators must determine whether a child can perform the required behavior or whether there is a skill deficit. They also indicate that "Self-strategies” (self-knowledge, self-management, self-monitoring, etc.) are important skills that can assist in teaching replacement behaviors.
Consider of a common behavior that occurs in the classroom, or that is represented in one of your students. Using Sugai's Differential Reinforcement template, determine what it is that the student is wanting to receive through performance of the behavior (what is the "function”) and the communicative intent of the behavior (why the student wishes to achieve the function).
Determine a possible "replacement behavior” that might be taught to the student that will allow the same needs to be met, but in a more appropriate manner.
Use Wheeler and Richey's "principles” on p. 331 of the text Behavior Management: Principles And Practices of Positive Behavior Support, to answer the following questions:
What might be a barrier to the child's use of the alternate behavior
How the environment might be modified, or supports added, to facilitate the performance of the alternate behavior?

Positive behavior in the classroom is significant in providing each learner with a conducive environment to study and acquire social skills. However, some children appear inclined into behaving negatively as a way of either seeking unnecessary attention or venting out due to emotional baggage (Boynton & Boynton, 2019). A teacher must investigate the underlying cause of bad behavior before responding in the form of punishment. This can be done by teaching a behavior that is a positive replacement to the ill habit. For instance, is a child constantly avoids homework on a particular subject, a teacher could teach other methods of tackling questions on the same using fun ideas that will stick more into a child's mind. Hence, a child is likely to refrain from acting out and attempt to do well to impress the teacher.
