Essay Instructions:

What are some of the consequences of schools that qualify as dropout factories? What impact does this have on a local economy? Sense of identity? Long-term health? What else did you notice about the statistics, charts, and graphs related to graduation rates? What challenges does this present for us as educators? What can we do to assure graduation success for a greater population of our school children? It is shocking that only 7 of 10 of students graduate from high school in this country... what should we be doing about this? Think from your perspective as a teacher... but also as a policy maker. What can we do?
How important are interest and affect in learning? Are these impoverished concepts in schools today or are students adequately interested? If so, is that just a factor of the individual person or is interest associated with a situation? What's the link between self-concept and interest? What's the link between self-concept, interest, and achievement? What do you think about flow? Is flow something we should be shooting for in schools and classrooms? Can you recall a time you experienced flow in a learning situation? How big of an issue is student motivation for you as a teacher? Are kids intrinsically or extrinsically motivated - for the most part? What does Brophy's motivation to learn lend to your understanding of motivation issues in the classroom? Is this what you want? If so, how will you get there? What's the connection between motivation, engagement, affect, flow... all these things... and student learning?
What's good and what's bad about ESSA? Think from multiple perspectives - teachers, students, administrators, parents, community members, society as a whole... Is this good legislation? I'm leaving this almost completely wide open as this is a big, big topic - with lots of room for debate. One caution - try to leave your own political perspectives out of this. In other words, don't argue about people or ideology, argue about the merits of the legislation and how it is affecting what is happening in the schools.

Question one
For kids and their families, dropping out of school has severe repercussions. Students who choose to drop out of school suffer societal shame, less employment prospects, poorer wages, and a greater risk of criminal justice involvement. Dropouts cost the United States more than $260 billion in lost earnings, government revenue, and output over the course of their lives. In terms of identification, dropping out of school has a negative effect on students' self-esteem and mental well-being since they are confronted with the fact that they lack the necessary skills and information to achieve their goals. Nonetheless, the long-term health of high school dropouts is harmed, as evidenced by the fact that they were more likely to report a significant chronic medical illness (e.g., allergies, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension) even after controlling the impact of age, revenue, sexuality, relationship status, and any alcoholism addiction.
The graduation rate for high school students was 88 percent for the 2018-2019 academic year, which was the same as the previous year's average. Graduate rates varied from an average of 75 percent to 94 percent throughout the states, according to data provided by the 17,618 rated schools included in the 2021 edition of the News Best High Schools rankings. This imposes a challenge to us educators in that we should work extra hard to ensure that all the students get to graduate by the end of the year. In order to increase the rate of students graduating us as educators should use Technology to Motivate Students and build a strong connection with the community. Nevertheless, to increase the number of students who graduate in the country, as a teacher, we should learn to engage parents to ensure students have support as they work towards their graduation. The other important thing is to create a safe and secure learning environment.
Question two
Interest is a powerful motivator for learning, directing educational and career pathways, and is essential for academic success. Students will be more interested and motivated if they are encouraged to pursue their interests. Affect has significant cognitive functions, including serving as a source of information when evaluating the worth or valence of things or people, activating matching memories, and affecting judgment and data processing. Both of the concepts are impoverished in different schools today. This is considered a factor of individual person.
Interest has been linked to both accomplishment and self-concept in previous studies. Achievement and self-concept, in particular, have been shown to have a predicted connection with subsequent personal interest in a field of study. The skill-development paradigm, on the other hand, argues that academic self-concept is a result of success, and that improving achievement skills is the best approach to increase academic self-concept. The either-or logic underpins both the self-improvement and skill-development theories.
To put it another way, being in the flow refers to the state of mind in which pupils find themselves in the narrow channel between indifference and dread. There is a delicate balance to be struck between t...
