Summary of the Author’s Position:
Louis Malforo is the Vice President for American Federation of Teachers and a member of the AFT Teachers Program and Policy Union. In his argument, titled ‘Lessons on Organizing Power', he perceives the teachers unions as having the ability to build lasting and productive relationships as well as exert positive influence in the improvement if teaching and learning.
He gives his story in teaching saying that when he started off as a teacher, he was a First year educator in a school where he experienced minimal to no mentoring and motivation. However, he says that the experience was on of the best and his teaching renewed his faith in the importance of public schools, the sector having been criticized for a significantly long time (Malforo, 2010). He further states that in contrast to the occurrences, teachers union provided him with the training and guidance that he needed to succeed in his career.
He divides his argument in four categories. The first one is assessment where he believes that teachers unions create meaningful forms of assessment that will take less class time and more on student instruction and direction. The second one is compensation where high ranking schools are awarded by the union while the third function is mentoring and the final one is retention.
