The reading covers the value of desirable difficulties, highlighting the relevance of hindrances to long-term learning retention. Teachers develop lesson plans to meet learning needs and the application of chapter reading will improve knowledge acquisition outcomes in the classroom context. Including interactive plans can improve the encoding of learning; therefore, visual and audio content should be shared in strategic sequences. Increasing physical hindrances to reading material can improve engagement with the text, signifying the importance of deliberate barriers that slow down the learning process and incentivize students to maintain focus on teaching areas. For instance, during reading sessions, students can read text with variations in font size and type. As a result, increased difficulty in classroom activity can positively impact knowledge acquisition.
Learnings on mental processes involving encoding, consolidation, and retrieval inform teachers on ways to restructure classroom activities. As a result, they can reinforce long-term knowledge retention and application. In the consolidation phase, deeper processing of memory traces leads to the organization and classification of learnings (Brown et al., 2014). Instructional practices should include opportunities for mental rehearsals of teachings, whereby spacing is applied between lessons. Encouraging students to write about learning improves their ability to forge meaningful connections between new information and prior knowledge. Therefore, reflection writing activities should be applied days after the initial lessons.
