One of the concepts of deep culture that is evident in Jorge Vargas's case study is the concept of time orientation. Vargas’ parents and other family members arrive at the IEP conference late, even though they have canceled the meeting twice in the past. Vargas’ parents can be said to come from a past-time orientation culture, which is common among non-western cultures (Stith-Williamns & Haynes, 2007). This culture takes a more laidback approach to the concept of time, unlike the future-oriented culture that does everything with a sense of urgency. On one hand, the case study reveals that the teacher was already at the venue on time and eagerly waiting for the parents, who, on the other hand, took their time to get there. The teacher, however, cannot tell this by just looking at the parents and, without a deeper understanding of culture; finds it difficult to understand their lack of timeliness. Another concept is that of communication. While the teacher uses verbal communication, Vargas’ parents use non-verbal communication throughout the meeting. Even when they are asked whether they have questions, they just stare and smile at the teacher. The staring and smiling is their way of responding to the teacher without the use of words. They also shake the teacher's hand at the end of the meeting without saying a word. Their lack of verbal communication can be attributed to the language barrier but according to Zamora (2015), Asian and Hispanic parents place a great emphasis on non-verbal communication due to their cultural background, which can ultimately affect parent-teacher interactions.
