Many counties in the United States have instigated the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which serve as benchmarks for K-12 education that redefine academic success in many states. However, studies revealed that despite the progress on its implementation, its complete execution had not been achieved, secondary to curriculum misalignment, leading to the poor performance of the students (Jones & King, 2012; Troia et al., 2016; Wu, 2017).
Charles County, Maryland, USA, is one area that needs investigation and analysis about the alignment between CCSS and the current curriculum. The study shall assess the impact of the CCSS and current curriculum on the students’ academic performance and its influence on their preparation for their future careers compared to other counties in Charles County. The study shall emphasize adult literacy through reading and writing. Moreover, it will investigate the effects of CCSS and the curriculum on students’ cognitive entrenchment by assessing their divergent and critical thinking skills. The study results will aid the educators in strategizing an excellent plan in facing the challenges that come with the mismatch between the CCSS and the current curriculum in Charles County.
