Research studies reveal that early relationships influence future relationships. Children who live in a safe environment surrounded by caring adults will feel secure in the future as compared to those with learning disabilities who will feel insecure due to low levels of attachment from caregivers. In an article by Rayner, K., Wood, H., & Beail, N. (2015). The ‘double‐bind of dependency’: early relationships in men with learning disabilities in secure settings, presents a study on how developing secure attachments is problematic for those with learning disabilities.
The authors emphasize on the need to understand the reasons behind such complexities among children with learning disabilities. That is why a study to explore attachment experience is necessary. The article presents a study where 10 individuals with learning disabilities were examined. The focus of the study was on how they formed relationships through interviews. The main theme was disempowerment and ineffective care (Rayner, Wood & Beail, 2015).
