The Ethical Dilemma
Introduction
The main purpose of this case study is to highlight the ethical dilemma that Nathalie has in choosing after her search for a job. The main ethical dilemma that she faces is racism. She is a white lady and had found an opportunity at the Achievement Success Leadership (ASL) Charter school, a low-income community of color. For many black Americans, racism and prejudice are realities of life. However, educational experiences have remained significantly distinct and unequal for minority pupils. Two-thirds of minority children still attend mostly minority schools. Unfair methods of school financing do minority and economically disadvantaged children unreasonable damage. Critical race theory is an academic idea that race is a social structure and that racism results from individual prejudice and something entrenched in systems, including schools. She was on a job search and was fortunate to find Achievement Success Leadership Charter school in Oakland, dominated by minority students, especially those of color. Unfortunately, she was white; hence this would come with many challenges as it would be hard for her to cope with the environment.
It was an ethical dilemma as she had an option of facing her fears and going against the grain in a bid to destroy oppression in the society by teaching in a minority-dominated school while she was white. She discussed the issue with her colleagues Isaac, Olivia, and Luis. Olivia and Luis were students of color; hence had faced the challenges first hand, therefore, could understand the issue well. She came from an affluent background in Pennsylvania; thus, the critical race theory typically highlighted her background. She also had a stereotype about Oakland, stating that it was under-resourced, thus the need for her to face the dilemma and do what was right. They discussed dismantling the oppressive system in their critical race theory class hence the need to practice what they preached. It is good that she became an instrument of change by taking ...
