Multicultural education has attracted both supporters and critics. While critics raise some important points, the argument for multicultural education is compelling. This paper presents a case for multicultural education.
First, multicultural education leads to the attainment of true excellence and equity in education. As pointed out by Bennett (2007), “educational excellence in our schools cannot be achieved without educational equity” (14). Equity, in this case, means equal opportunities for students to reach their fullest potential (Bennett, 2007). The education system is characterized by inequities; for example, the high dropout rates among African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians. For educational excellence to be achieved, the educational system must be just and impartial (Bennett, 2007). As noted by the author, multicultural education recognizes that the potential for brilliance is spread across ethnic groups.
