Adjuncts workers in the United States universities rely exclusively on teaching jobs for their employment (Brennan & Magness, 2018). However, they are other groups of adjunct workers who are full-term professional in other areas while are others are retires persons who are only looking for part-time income (Brennan & Magness, 2018). According to various studies, universities and colleges employ approximately 752,669 adjuncts workers to teach more than 1,578,336 courses per year. These costs the institutions about 4.3 billion dollars annually (Brennan & Magness, 2018). Adjuncts significantly vary from each other. For example, some of them lack those lacks the PHDs, which are the minimum education credentials to be employed for full-time teaching jobs in any high education institution (Brennan & Magness, 2018). On the other hand, some of the adjunct workers are ABD graduates whose aim is to earn more cash as they work on their dissertations.
According to Adjunct faculty activists, adjuncts exploited in their places of work by being poorly treated. Adjuncts workers are described differently by various activists (Brennan & Magness, 2018). For example, Al Jazeera describes them as indentured servants, Times Herald communists as modern American slaves, while Guardian and Boston call them exploited professors (Brennan & Magness, 2018). Adjunct faculty appears to receive a raw deal compared to the full-time faculty. This because adjunct tends to employed on per course basis in the United States. They receive pay of 2700 dollars per semester.
Moreover, they do not receive any more benefits from universities such as involvement in governance, the fund for research activities, job security, and access to contingent contracts (Brennan & Magness, 2018). On the other hand, tenure track faculty enjoys the highest pays, significant fringe benefits, participation in the university governance, senior job status, excellent job security, and access to research funding support (Brennan & Magness, 2018). The exploitation of these adjuncts workers leads to the breaching of university ethics.
In higher education institutions, adjuncts workers are overworked and underpaid. According to their activists, the workers perform the same work with the university professors, but they are paid less (Brennan & Magness, 2018). Furthermore, they state that the adjuncts work for long hours without receiving any compensation. On the other hand, full-time workers in these institutions work for shorter hours receiving high payment. They claim that the evidence of this kind of exploitation can be found in the statistical data of these institutions (Brennan & Magness, 2018). However, some of the university activist’s claim that adjunct workers receive exploitation since most of them do not meet the minimum required entries for full-time job employment.
