The “Cheyenne” book chapter by Manu Karuka uses a historically-grounded approach to demonstrate the implications and erasures of the capitalist and imperialist transcontinental railroad development. For the most part, the transcontinental railroad history is glorified through grand notions of American territorial identity and Manifest Destiny while giving little attention to the prior indigenous sovereignties that populated the lands on which the rail passed through.
