The analysis and understanding of the different underpinnings of an organization is not a new topic. As early as the time of the Ancient Greeks, many philosophers have contemplated the idea of a collective body of individuals as well as whether it can function independently from the whims of those who compose it. Accordingly, this article would focus on some of the previous works of philosophers concerning the idea of the organization. This includes an analysis of their previous works and reasoning as well as how their ideas relate to the view of what an organization is. Based on a careful reading of all their works, the author believes that it makes sense to view an organization as a separate 'person' since its usual functions and circumstances are significantly different from the individual acts and decisions of men who compose it.

Despite the differences in the approaches and the works of philosophers, it seems that all of them would answer 'yes' to the question as to whether an organization can be deemed as a person.
Organizations as Persons
First, let us focus on the works of Thomas Hobbes. It could be seen that a significant volume of Hobbes' work has been dedicated to understanding the nature and the concept of the State. In his book entitled the Leviathan, Hobbes expressly indicated that the ideal commonwealth is similar to an 'artificial person,' which mimics the human body working together in order to ensure the integrity of the whole. Although a commonwealth is ruled a sovereign authority, he also recognizes that it is the collective action and decision of the body politic that grants power to the ruler, which is then tasked to protect the whole body in return. This is similar for corporations whereby the leaders and the workers are continuously cooperating in order to ensure the working of the whole body, which is the company.
Another thinker that would argue that an individual is a corporation is John Stuart Mill. John Stuart Mill is one of the thinkers who have been lauded for this idea of the utilitarian approach. This principle shows that individuals make decisions based on what they believe is best for them, and the absence of such benefits could make them choose otherwise CITATION Mil11 \l 1033 (Mill, 2011). In addition to this, Mill has continuously believed that 'freedom' is one of the best sources of utility value for every person. Going back to the idea of organizations, it could be seen that the organization's collective drive towards improving profitability (financial freedom) and increasing its value despite the actions of its members gives its distinct personality.
