The most significant obstacle I have faced has been my struggle with depression. Depression is one of the most serious conditions that affect one’s mental health (Nydegger, 2016). My struggle with depression started in my second year of college. A mixture of fear, hate, guilt, and regret made me want to commit suicide. Depression is an ugly thing when you are going through it. It blinds one of the goodness in life (Nydegger, 2016). It leaves one only with space for survival. It is said that killing oneself is a matter of choice. But one of the things that drove me into depression kept me from taking my own life. Fear is a powerful thing, for it makes us accept our mortality.
My depression started with fear/insecurity about life. I could not comprehend how I was supposed to proceed at this crucial stage in my life. All my friends seemed capable, but I was not. Also, my family, friends, and community’s expectations of me were weighing me down. In addition to this, I had relationship problems. Prior to joining college, I had ended a one-year-long relationship that had started in high school. However, things got worse when my former girlfriend was admitted to the same college I attended. My emotions affected me daily.
I decided to address my depression by going back home and seeking treatment. Although I took this step in a moment of desperation, it ended up being the only one I needed. By going back home, I placed myself in the company of those that care for me the most. Help is also a powerful thing. It makes one forget their troubles and create a new path filled with positivity (Nydegger, 2016). As part of my rehabilitation, I decided to go for counseling. Also, I started going to church, for I had stopped for some time now. I have always kept to myself and dismissed a lot of things in life easily. So, I also had to learn to become more open to life. All these solutions were ideas that I had to implement to begin my healing process. But, perhaps, the most important part was spending time at home with my family and friends.
