Rhetorical Analysis Essay
Josephine Baker, a US citizen by birth, was also struggling with inequality and segregation. She was an activist and dancer during the jazz age, and this made her very influential. Baker used her popularity to raise awareness about racism as a member of the civil rights movement and the French resistance. She delivered her speech as she stood in front of a large crowd in front of the Lincoln Memorial in August. 28, 1963, during “the march on Washington” (BlackPast, 2019). She represents the legacy of black women looking to uplifting the entire community (BlackPast, 2019). Baker uses logos and ethos to establish her credibility and pathos to enhance her remarks, encouraging the audience to follow her advice.
Baker uses logical arguments and information in the speech, ensuring that the audience understands that she has valid reasons to support her views. This is an effective way to persuade the audience using facts and logic or other data (Wróbel, 2017). She says, “… But I could not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee, and that made me mad.  And when I get mad, you know that I open my big mouth” (BlackPast, 2019). She describes her experiences and that she is often undergoing segregation despite her background. She uses her background as an example of what she is experiencing due to her skin color.
The speaker also wants to audience to feel the same emotions that she feels by creating an emotional response to her story (Bentley & Workman, 2018). She refers to her audience as friends when she says, “…and when you scream, friends, I know you will be heard” (BlackPast, 2019). ...
