COM 317 week 2 assignment

Chapter 2 of your textbook discusses the importance of good business writing in accomplishing goals. In order to accomplish a goal, you first have to know what that goal is (duh), and then think about the audience you are writing to, the audience you need to accomplish that goal.

Your textbook puts it this way: “When you define your goal and consider your reader, it becomes much easier to figure out the content – the facts, ideas or arguments that will produce the results you want. And when you systematically determine content, organizing your message becomes a more natural process. So does choosing the right language and tone.”

That’s a lot to think about all at once, but the more you do that type of writing, the easier it becomes – almost like second nature. I call this form of writing “purposeful writing,” because it is writing for a particular purpose. (Duh.)

So, for this week’s writing assignment, think of an organization that is important to you. It may be UB, because that’s occupying a lot of your attention right now. It may be some subset of UB – your academic department, or a club or group you’re involved with. It might be your church or other place of worship, your old high school, a restaurant or bar you liked to hang out in (pre-pandemic), a charity you volunteer for, or a company you work for, or would like to work for once you’ve graduated. You pick the organization you want to write about.

Then write a 750-word profile of that organization. Write for a reader who has never heard of the organization, but who might benefit from knowing about it. Your goal is simply to provide information about that organization to someone with no knowledge of it.

Here are some rules to follow:

  • Do not write in first person (I, we), but keep it objective. You may include anecdotes or personal examples, but tell them in third person (he, she, they).

  • Provide as much relevant information about the organization as you can within the word limit. You will do some research about the organization’s history, activities, purpose, etc., and then consider what parts of that information are relevant to your reader.

  • Once you have written, proofread. This is when we check to make sure all the words are spelled correctly, the grammar is precise, the wording is understandable and readable. Do not submit your work until you have completed this important step.

  • Your assignment is due at the end of the day on Friday.

Each person has a dream company where they want to work. This company may serve as their motivation to excel. Some strive hard to build a strong resume to get accepted to their dream workplace. Others gather experience as much as possible to be able to stand out among the other applicants. In this case, Google is the company of interest.
At first glance, Google company is an ideal place to work. With all the benefits and perks, one cannot just simply say no to this company. Google is recognized as the leading Internet search engine in the world. It is considered to have a unique culture among its employees which maintain its satisfaction rate high. The workplace looks like a giant adult playground wherein employees can interact and rest. Google company is known to be one of the leading companies that provide customers a variety of results from a single search.
Google has a rich history itself. Then the development of Google began at Stanford in 1995. Both Larry Page And Sergey Brin are college students of Stanford. Page was considering the place for his school, while Brin was tasked to show him around the area. A partnership was later on built that led to the development of Google. As there were no headquarters or an official office yet, this search engine was built in their respective dorm rooms. The first search engine that they were able to develop was named as Backrub. Links were used on the World Wide Web (www) in defining the utmost importance of these individual pages. Backrub was then later on changed to Google, a word derived from a mathematical word “googol” which can be defined as a value wherein 1 is followed 100 zeros. Moreover, this name was used to reflect its mission of organized information that is both useful and accessible worldwide (https://about.google/our-story/, n.d.).
Google has been becoming increasingly popular in the academe community as the years passed by. This popularity attracts investors such as Silicon Valley which led to the birth of Google Inc. in the year 1998. With an investment of $100,000, Page and Brin were able to establish their first office – a garage in suburban Menlo Park, California. Even before, the tone of the workplace has...
