Critically reflect on the film Evaporating Borders or On the Bride's Side and use at least one of the required readings uploaded under Week 4 as a lens to inform your reflection.

 

ASSIGNMENTS CRITICAL REFLECTION ASSIGNMENTS

● Description of assignment: Write a 500-550 word response that critically reflects on the the film and at least one reading for the week, relating them to each other and to the broader themes of the course. Your assignments should demonstrate your understanding of both. Do not simply describe film, or detail out the plot and characters, instead - discuss the films in relation to the concepts and themes brought up 5 in the reading/s and vice versa. (See themes under Course Description: Pg 2-3 in this syllabus).

 

● Assignment Prompt: Here are some questions to prompt your critical reflections. You do not have to answer each of these questions in each post, but use them as a generic prompt to guide you as you watch, read, analyze and write about films/texts in this course.

○ What are the central arguments made by the assigned film(s) and texts(s)for the week, in relation to the subject of immigration or diversity?

○ What social/cultural/political/historical issues brought into focus in the films?

○ What themes emerge from these films and texts with regard to social justice, gender/race/nation or global issues in the materials studied?

○ How do you connect to these issues/themes personally, and how do the films and readings help you understand them in new ways (or not)?

 

● Style: A critical reflection should ideally combine an analytical approach and personal experience or outlook. It is not mandatory to argue your position like in an academic essay, but it is required to analyze and reflect on the course materials assigned.

○ Balance the reflection with personal opinion (or lived experience) and objective analysis of film and readings as far as possible.

○ Do not make sweeping statements without justification; illustrate your point using examples/quotes/scenarios from films and/or texts to support your argument.

○ Give emphasis to both film and readings to demonstrate your understanding of both in relation to each other. Writing only about the film and ignoring the reading or vice-versa can adversely impact your grades.

 

● Structure: You can divide your reflection into (at least) 3 paragraphs including a brief introduction, a body (main analysis of texts and films) and a brief conclusion. (You do not have to label each paragraph as such 6

○ Title of post (in the subject line): Title your reflection in a manner that helps the reader get a quick sense of the contents of your post. It can be creatively worded or just functional or both, that is up to you.

○ Introduction: Provide an opening statement that indicates how you are approaching this weeks materials, giving an entry for the reader into your reflection. Make sure to mention the title of the film and the reading/s you are reflecting on within the first 1-3 sentences of your reflection.

 ○ Body: The main content of your reflection that focuses on the analysis of one film and at least one text for the week. Relating them to each other.

○ Conclusion: Try to end your piece with a central question informed by your reflection, indicating a direction you would like to explore in relation to the subject.

 

 

● Citations: Cite the film and readings within the text and also at the end of your post, following any commonly accepted format such as Chicago (Notes and Bib or Author-Date), MLA, APA etc (excluded from Word count). If you refer to any additional texts or films, you may cite them in addition to the required films and readings, however ensure that the content of your reflection is mainly devoted to the assigned course materials. The refugee problem is common among the countries in the Middle East. Often, most of these countries are involved in wars that force many of their citizens to seek refuge in other neighboring nations. However, the immigration process is seldom easy since there are usually many challenges encountered along the way. The film “On the Bride’s Side” is a true depiction of some of these struggles, with the main one being crossing the border to the other side. The film follows the story of the Syrian war that left some Palestinians and Syrians running to seek safety in Sweden. In the course of the journey, they enter Europe from where they get help from a journalist of Italian origin and a Palestinian poet. This paper explores the issue of immigration, its causes and effect on the immigrants through the lens of different articles. Overall, the immigration problem in the Middle East is caused by the continuous wars among the countries, which often leave people with the challenge of seeking refuge in countries with stricter laws.
The text by MTL and the film both address the humanitarian crisis against refugees and immigrants in the European cities. As seen from the film, the Syrian and Palestinian immigrants found themselves in Europe where there were strict laws against asylum seekers from the Middle East. Due to this, they had to work together by faking a wedding in order to escape being scrutinized by the border policemen who would undoubtedly have sent them all back to Syria.
