Relationships depend on thriving interpersonal communication anchored in trust, which is often challenging to get and ascertain. Uncertainties affect the people in a relationship leading to trust issues. In situations where trust is in doubt, uncertainty reduction strategies help people build trust. One way to reduce uncertainty is to use secret tests, which can help rebuild a shuttering trust. However, uncertainty reduction strategies can harm our relationships, while results of secret tests can positively impact a relationship. It depends on how one uses these strategies and the tests on their partners.
Uncertainty reduction strategies refer to how people use communication to reduce uncertainties in their relationships. People are often uncomfortable with uncertainties and seek ways to predict the trajectory of their social interactions. Three uncertainty reduction strategies exist, including passive, active, and interactive strategies, which people utilize trying to predict and explain a person’s behaviour during interaction. Passive strategies involve observing someone from a distance. One remains silent and only observes the other person noting any trends without consulting the person, third party, or researching. Active strategies involve researching on someone to get more information about them. For example, one can do a background check online about a person.
