The media is a diverse platform of expression. Hence, its bases are changing over time. The media need to adapt to the consumers' necessities and want to deliver quality information, entertainment, and others. Through the years, there has been a change of focus from media production to media consumption, and the changes can be explained through various lenses, which include symbolic interactionism, queer, and feminism.
Media production is the process of giving shape to a piece of information in television, music, broadcasting, and others. By contrast, media consumption defines how the consumers take in the information produced by the media (Slavin, 2018; UN Women, 2020). The shift can be explained through the lens of symbolic interactionism, which reinforces and complicates media consumption. This perspective supports the significance of people’s interactions in creating an idea and that their perspectives are as critical as that of the creator. Here, the people look at the media as a straightforward representation and a profound concept with a hidden meaning (Lumen Learning, n.d.). The way the consumers interpret becomes an important factor in considering what type of media must be presented. Thus, shifting the trend from production to consumption.
Another influence is the concept of “queer,” which demonstrates how the media can change a person’s sexuality.
