Vape Bans & their effect on businesses
Recently, the state of New York passed a legislation that banned selling flavored e-cigarettes. It is the second state in the united states to do that after Michigan. Flavored e-cigarettes have become common among teens than the other types of e-cigarettes. According to CITATION Car18 \l 1033 (Campanile, 2018), a recent state survey found that 46 percent of teens prefer fruit flavors, followed by 20 percent for menthol and 18 percent for chocolate, candy or other sweets. Thus, this shows that flavoring e-cigarettes have a significant impact on the consumption patterns of the product. The flavored cigarettes are as harmful as the other e-cigarettes. They are, however, more appealing than the other non-flavored e-cigarettes, and it could be the reason why they have led to increased vaping among teens and youth who have a plethora of flavor choice. Health officials have established that there are nearly over 15,000 flavors in the marketCITATION Car18 \l 1033 (Campanile, 2018). These flavors include apple, cherry, peach, melon, strawberry, vanilla, custard, peanut butter cup, cream cookie, bubble razz, mango burst, and caramel. The agenda of the government is to control and reduce vaping among the youth by banning flavors that have enticed many to take up vaping.
Reasons for the Ban
Vaping has increased exponentially in the recent past. According to the health department, ‘Vaping among high school students has skyrocketed 160 percent in four years– from 10.4 percent in 2014 to 27.4 percent in 2018CITATION Car18 \l 1033 (Campanile, 2018).’ The rate at which vaping has increased among the youth has prompted the government to regulate the products. The first step was to ban flavored e-cigarettes. This measure is aimed at reducing before it becomes a health problem. There have been recent reports implicating vaping as cause of death and in other cases causing other conditions. Thus, the state of New York sought to regulate the environment and ensure very few people love the product. Flavors are used to personalize and encourage the consumption of e-cigarettes, and therefore banning the flavors may reduce the number of smokers.
Vaping has several health risks. First, it contains an addictive substance, nicotine. Nicotine has various adverse health effects, and it is very addictive. Vaping has also been thought as a precursor of smoking. It is thought to introduce children to smoking. Some studies have shown that vaping is carcinogenic. Some of the compounds contained in the flavors can increase the risk of developing cancer especially lung cancer. Vaping has also been attributed to many lung diseases and affects the optimal functioning of the organ. Some vaping consumers have been hospitalized for shortness of breath and/or chest pain before more severe breathing difficulty CITATION Har19 \l 1033 (Harvard Medical School, 2019). There has been increased reporting of severe lung diseases, and in other cases death among vape users and the trend seems to show that vaping has very many adverse health effects. Other dangers of vaping include possible nicotine poisoning for exposure to the liquid. In other cases, some peo...
