Media Inventory and Assessment
The advancement of technology that characterizes our modern world has led to the emergence of new media channels for our exposure. While I spend much of my media time watching television, I also take time to visit social media apps where I interact with friends, people of similar interests, and news. In this regard, I indulge in several media:
* Home improvement and DIY shows on HGTV
* Crimes shows on ID Channel and Vice on TV
* Facebook
* Twitter
* Billboards
* Posters on sides of buildings
On average, I spend about three to four hours watching television. In particular, I enjoy home improvement reality shows on HGTV and the crime shows on ID channel and Vice on TV. I also like crime shows because of the mysterious actions and events that we cannot witness in regular life. I think the associated adrenaline rush makes them interesting to watch. Apart from television, I also spend at most an hour per day going through Facebook and Twitter feeds. On Facebook, I get to interact with friends and also encounter posts from groups and pages I follow. On Twitter, I learn what is going on in regards to the news and what is trending. While outside on the streets, I interact with billboards and posters with advertising messages.
There are several goals for tuning to the different media I interact with. The first is to learn and get informed. I believe media offers a great tool for learning entertainingly. As informed above, one of the channels I interact with daily is HGTV that provides home improvement and DIY shows, which I find quite informative. I also get informed through Twitter as I get to understand what is going on around the country and the world. My second goal is entertainment. The different shows I interact with are entertaining. In particular, I find the crime shows on ID Channel and Vice on TV thrilling. Twitter and Facebook also offer entertainment but not as much as I get from the crime shows. These two social media apps help me accomplish another important goal: interacting with friends and family. Through Facebook, I am updated on how my friends and family are doing via their posts and get to interact with them through likes and comments.
I would say in some instances I actively interpret the messages I receive but in others, I tend to interpret them with automatic responses. When it comes to home improvement and DIY shows, I believe I actively interpret the messages I receive. I concentrate on these shows to make sure I understand how certain things are done so that I may apply them in my home. As noted by Potter (2016), when we need a particular kind of information, we actively seek it and there are high chances of us learning from it. When it comes to crime shows, my responses are automatic. Excitement and bewilderment characterize my reactions and I do not take ti...
