Social media has become part of young people’s daily lives and the majority of them spend many hours every day on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, TikTok, Snapchat, and other social networking platforms. In particular, a cross-sectional study conducted by Karim et al. show that the number of social media users has an annual growth rate of 9%, and it was estimated to be 3.484 billion in 2019 (Karim et al. 2020). Based on the Displaced Behavior Theory, individuals who spend more time on social media have less time for physical interactions, which adversely affects their mental health.
Naslund et al. (2020) argue that young individuals who use social media for many hours daily have increased vulnerabilities to mental disorders. Specifically, based on a survey shared by the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), young adults and adolescents aged between 12 and 21 years with mood and psychotic disorders reported over 97% usage of social media, with average social media use of 2.5 hours daily (Naslund et al., 2020).
