Our Land Acknowledgement for UW Bothell
The following acknowledgement was developed in conversations among faculty Anida Yoeu Ali, Will Hartmann, and Lauren Lichty, and lisaaksiichaa, the UW Tribal Liaison. The acknowledgement reflects the specific location of UW Bothell on Willow (Sammamish) territories.
We acknowledge that we live and work on the unceded ancestral lands of the Coast Salish people and pay our respects to elders past and present. We recognize the UWB campus specifically sits on the original territory belonging to the Willow (Sammamish) People.

Land Acknowledgment recognizes how the institutions of power have oppressed the indigenous people and it illustrates how such historical oppression could have influenced how non-indigenous interact and perceive the indigenous communities.
The Voices from the Native American and Indigenous Peoples Steering Group at Northwestern indicates that Land Acknowledgement aims to perform specific roles which include addressing the aspect of indigenous community invisibility, preserving traditions, creating alliances, challenging thinking, and eliciting community introspection (HonorNativeLand). The aims of the Land Acknowledgment highlight its significance to the indigenous community. The Land Acknowledgement is crucial; it is an introspection process that can reveal harsh truths and injustices that occurred in both past and present times, especially this kind of injustices is done by the institutions that are entrusted to protect fairness, rights, equity, and justice. The indigenous community is ordinarily aware of such problems.
Land Acknowledgment is still practiced in the contemporary world. There are indigenous minority communities in the U.S from countries like New Zealand, Canada, and Australia, among others; it is ordinary to launch events and gatherings by acknowledging these traditional indigenous minorities (HonorNativeLand). A section of the U.S has fully embraced the concept of acknowledging the indigenous minority while the vast majority has not adopted this concept.
