The film “Modern Times” is starred by Charlie Chaplin and it is fun, entertaining, yet, silent. Chaplin shows his best here because he is young, funny, and thriving. There are a lot of movies that are timeless, but as time goes by audiences no longer continue to watch them. The good thing about this film is that Charlie remains the same and its theme shows a lot about themes in society, that Chaplin needed to dramatize the struggle.
The foreword of the picture is indeed meaningful because it is about industry and individual enterprise because humanity continues to find happiness. This is why the film is also a critique of industrialized production and capitalism. It is then supported by symbolic shots of sheep being herded and workers coming out of the factory.
Chaplin had his mind on social and economic problems of that time. In a newspaper interview, Chaplin said: “Unemployment is the vital question… Machinery should benefit mankind. It should not spell tragedy and throw it out of work.” Through the film, he was able to change his anxieties and observations to comedy.
