Introduction
As technology continues dictating much of the day to day processes, it also continues affecting the way people relate and conduct themselves. What is actually the most important aspect of it all is that technology has increased efficiency and convenience, by enhancing and increasing the communication channels, thereby making it easier than ever before for people to interact. Through the various devices that are now there for the purposes of communication, technology has ensured that there is even more and more evolution in them. The essence of this evolution isn’t just to enhance communication, but also to make these gadgets more portable and generally, more user friendly. Nowadays, these gadgets have everything that one can need, from the basic communication, to entertainment and even socialization. It has thereby made people increasingly attached to the gadgets, thereby impacting differently on them, as far as interpersonal and social skills go.
How does digital technology and social networks affect our social and interpersonal skills?
At any instance, taking for example a social event such as a party or a wedding, it is commonplace to see people pressing or touching their gadgets than talking to each other. The same can be said of restaurants or hotels, people tend to drop their heads, devoting much of their attention on their phones and other communication gadgets, than how they relate to those seated next to them. Social media has created some form of ideal, virtual world, whereby people become what they aren’t in reality (Keller, 2013). It is indeed quite interesting and surprising as well, to note that people are nowadays more social via social media than in face to face encounters.
The medium or aperture that technology has created in the form of social media, has continued hampering the essence of interpersonal skills.Digital technology has affected interpersonal and social skills because, through it, there is a general lack of deep relationships established and strengthened, since the interaction is mainly superficial via social media. Secondly, there is a tendency to have a vacuum when it comes to new ideas, since, through virtual communication, one is likely to relate with only the people who agree with his or her ideas (Fowlkes, 2012). There is therefore a lack of new ideas and criticisms that would have otherwise been obtained through face to face interaction.
