1) Briefly review all the major sections of a research article (rationale, methods, results and discussion) on either: Foot-In-The-Door, Expectancy Violation Theory, Interpersonal Deception Theory(pick one). The research piece (Human experimental only) must be taken from a communication journal (or related field) and cited using APA style (in-text and reference page). Use a library database to find the article. Make sure the journal is available first (in full text).
2) Provide a mass media example of this “concept” in action. For example, if the study you pick deals with FITD and employer/employee relations, this section and the following should have nothing to do with employer/employee relations. Provide logical support for how this example is in line with the communication concept. Don’t use examples from the research piece. The example should be taken from popular culture (books, films, commercials, billboards, Internet). i.e. you must provide enough detail about the example to make it clear how the example fits the concept you pick. Getting people to do something big that will cost them is not easy. That is why such a move must be strategic. One of the ways of getting people to agree to a large request is the foot-in-the-door (FITD) technique. Using this approach, once people agree on a smaller request, they are likely to accept a bigger one in the future.
A research by Gueguen, Meineri, Martin & Grandjean (2010) aimed to test the combined effort of two techniques meant to induce compliance. These were the FITD and the “but you are free…” techniques. The study involved 200 homeowners as participants, where 102 were men and 98 women. The research took place in Vannes, France, which has a population of 80,000 people. The age group of the participants ranged from 20-75 years. The participants were chosen while at home.
In the study, the homeowners were required to offer a record of the whole household waste for one month. Using the FITD technique, the respondents were asked to respond to a survey that included selective sorting habits. In the second instance, the request for participation included a statement that showed that the respondents were free to accept the participation or not. Thirdly, the investigators combined the FITD with “you are free” condition. Lastly, the control condition was administered without the mention that the respondents were free or not.
The results of the compliance were as follows: combined FITD/‘‘you are free . . .’’ (78%), single FITD (60.0%), ‘‘but you are free . . .’’ (56.0%), and the control condition (40.0%). The results demonstrate how people should do when making people participate in something. Firstly, including a verbal solicitation showing that participants are free to accept or decline; and secondly beginning with a small request before proceeding to solicit the respondents to make greater compliances (Gueguen et al, 2010).
