1 Introduction
Islamic State is among the listed terror groups that are currently the major problem in the world, with their bases mainly in the Middle East countries such as Syria, Yemen, Iraq, among other countries CITATION Has14 \l 1033 (Hashim, 2014). Terrorists are known to use a range of advantages against their victims to achieve their aims. They use their power to target non-combatants; the softer the target, the easier it is to achieve their mission CITATION Moo16 \l 1033 (Moore, 2016). Their attacks are aimed at undefended targets or those with weak security profiles to exploit them to achieve maximum publicity to meet their goals CITATION Gam14 \l 1033 (Gambhir, 2014).
Power has been the subject of geopolitics both in the past and in the present. This is likely to continue into the future CITATION Fel18 \l 1033 (Felbab-Brown, 2018). The US has been blamed for using Islamic nation and people to fight its battle. The US is said to have used Osama bin Laden and others to fight against USSR and later turned against and neglected the fighters who later realized they were used to raise US to powerCITATION Bin00 \l 1033 (Harding, 2000). Saddam Hussein was raised by the US to fight against Iran during the 1980s Iranian war and 1990 Kuwait war CITATION Mik03 \l 1033 (Burke, 2003). Later, Saddam was disposed of by the US. In Afghanistan reports showed that US sponsored terrorism to achieve its goal as well as many ills in Iraq and Kuwait CITATION CB18 \l 1033 (CB, 2018). The groups and even countries found that their common enemy is the US who has wielded power and used them, a power they are rising to claim using various approaches.
To understand how the terror group uses power, it is important to review its origin.
2 Origins of Islamic State and What it Hopes to Achieve
In the year 2004, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who spearheaded insurgency attacks against US allied forces in Iraq declared allegiance to Osama bin Laden and established Al-Qaeda in Iraq CITATION Tar15 \l 1033 (Tara, 2015). In 2006, Abu Ayyub Al-Masri replaced al-Zarqawi after the leader was killed in US airstrikes. On October 15, 2006 Al-Masri rebranded AlQaeda in Iraq as Islamic State CITATION Tar15 \l 1033 (Tara, 2015). In April, 2010, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi was named leader of Islamic State in Iraq following death of Al-Masri who blew himself up after being ambushed by US-Iraqi troops.On May 9, 2013, Islamic State in Iraq announced merger with its equivalent in Syria and was renamed “Al-DAwla Al-Islamiya fi al-Iraqwa al-Sham” which is translated into Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS).
By January 4, 2014, ISIS took control of Fallujah the area where the US lead coalition forces had the fiercest battle with Saddam’s forces in 2004 CITATION Tar15 \l 1033 (Tara, 2015). Ten days later, ISIS took control of Syrian city called Raqqa. On February 3, 2014, Ayman Al-Zawahiri leader of Al-Qaeda Syria cut ties with ISIS because of its extreme measures.
