The big tech companies monetize personal information, but there is growing support for better data protection and privacy and the European Union has adopted such measures (CBS, 2018).  Facebook contains largest-ever repositories of  users data, and recently there have been growing concerns that his data is not secure and can be exploited in elections, yet the management has sought to hide the extent of the vulnerabilities (Frenkel, 2018). Big tech companies and most organizations with websites collect some of personal data, but they use this data differently. In the US data protection laws and regulations are less strict than Europe, with opposition among those who believe that this would amount to regulation. However, there are also concerns that collecting personal data without the users’ knowledge amounts to surveillance.  There is no uniform law on data privacy in the US, as there is a patchwork of laws at the state and national level.  The Federal Trade Commission Act is the most cited to protect against unfair or deceptive practices in advertising of online and offline data.
