In chapter two, it was clear that firms should not only focus on the effectiveness and efficiency of their internal operations without paying close attention to what is happening in the external environment (Dess, Lumpkin, Eisner, & McNamara, 2012). Kickstarter’s entrepreneurial strategy was a unique one. The company started on 28th April 2009, and its founders were Charles Adler, Yancey Strickler, and Perry Chen. Indeed, it introduced the concept of crowdfunding, which enabled cultural or artistic ventures to receive contributions from people on the web to fund their projects. In April 2013, the most renowned American crowdfunder was Kickstarter, with more than 92,000 launched projects and over $450 million (Case 26).
Although Kickstarter was the first one of its kind to start operations successfully, it is not immune to challenges from the external environment. In particular, Porter’s Five Forces reveal that the threat of new firms entering the market is high in the crowdfunding and technology sector (Miller, 2019).
