The 2020 Presidential elections in the United States have been the most divisive, with the country experiencing strong political division. It is a historical moment as people continue to grapple with the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. The pronouncement of Joe Biden as the president-elect can bring much relief to an already divided America. Donald Trump’s policy and legislative agenda were mainly focused on internal affairs, with much focus on undoing what the previous regime had done. With the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the current presidential election, what can the world expect as Joe Biden is set to be sworn as the 46th President?
The international audience was waiting, with tense anticipation of who would win the contest. Many populist politicians across the world rallied the incumbent to win the election. Many people who wanted the globalist and revival of American foreign policy engagement favored the win for Joe Biden. Evidently, Trump’s administration and policy approach weakened the position of Americans in global politics. However, the country is divided along ideological lines, and Biden must be prepared to deal with the internal struggles to avoid damage to the unity the country has enjoyed for many decades. The foreign policy approach implemented by President Trump was very controversial. Many of his actions were deliberate in undermining international organizations' legitimacy and the geopolitical role of America.
As a Democrat is set to occupy Whitehouse in January 2021, the world must expect a complete overhaul of Trump’s foreign policy approach. President Trump's goal was to ease the obligation of America’s foreign policy role and ensure that there was much focus on the internal issues that Americans worried about. Some of these issues included rising rates of unemployment, the issues of immigration, and taxation. While these issues were important to address, it was myopic for Trump to ignore America's geopolitical role. This has harmed the reputation of the United States in international diplomacy. The slogan that guided Trump’s policies was “America first.” This was done with a complete disregard of the diplomatic commitments America had towards the world.
