The WTO is the global organization that handles trade disputes among member states. It ensures a smooth and amicable solution, in the best way possible, for these challenges. The organization has a set of rules, constitution based on the various trade agreements and policies that have been passed by these member states. Any dispute therefore, is handled using the lens of the set rules and regulations at hand. This ensures that there is a clear, balanced and unbiased form of judgment for any issue.
The most recent trade dispute pitted the United States and Canada. The United States filed a case to the WTO against Canada on January 18th, asking for consultations with Canada on the regulations concerning the sale of wine, in the province of British Columbia in Canada. The measure by the Canadian government affected the sale of wine in stores. According to the united states, Canada has put in place measures that are biased ,having rules that govern the sale of local wines ,and a different set of rules when it comes to the sale imports in British Columbia(WTO,2017).
The United States cited that this was in contravention to the regulations put in place in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade of 1994. According to the GATT 1994, there should be a smooth transition within customs unions and therefore little friction when it comes to the creation of new negotiations from the home country whose products are in question (WTO, 2017).<...
