A community refers to the people we live among, including educational institutions and residential homes. People co-exist socially, economically, and politically, and everyone wants to feel included and valued. Everyone wants to have their voices heard, and their opinions are considered a building factor in various sectors of life. This can only be achieved through fostering inclusivity and supporting the community members in social, economic, and political endeavors. Helping the community and fostering inclusivity should be everybody's endeavor. I am not an influential person, but I have taken significant steps to help my community and preach inclusivity. In both, I have always been transparent, led from the top, used inclusive language, amplified marginalized voices, accepting critical feedback from people around me.
Transparency is significant in helping a community and fostering inclusivity. Transparency refers to being open and honest with self and other people or organizations. People cultivate trust in various ways, including transparency or siding with transparent people (Farmer et al., 2019). It involves always telling the truth and laying open plans for the community. Transparency is crucial because it has a diverse composition that should feel like one. I always ensure that I tell the truth to my colleagues who come from various backgrounds in my college community. I never hide anything from my African, Asian, Indian or European colleagues. This has earned me a respectable position where various students approach me for consultation because they know I am transparent and always tell the truth. In being transparent, I always ensure that I use appropriate words and context to pass my message to the community members, which comprises slow learners, various races, and also people with disability.
Leading from the top ensures that the rest of the community members use you as a role model to do good and foster community inclusivity. A leader does not always have to hold a certain role in the community (Working Ideal, 2020). Instead, it can be anybody who aims at making their impact felt in the community. I have always strived to lead from the top in my college and residential community. I treat all the community members equally. I always approach all my colleagues equally when I need an explanation about a certain academic concept. I do this regardless of a person's physical state, race, learning ability, or position in the University's leadership. This way, I make people feel free to approach me when they need help, thus fostering inclusivity.
