Introduction
After the establishment of the industrial revolution, there has been a bigger debate on whether a corporation should honor its ethical obligations or just operate solely with an objective of achieving profit maximization. However, since an organization’s brand largely depend on how it is perceived by its publics; most of the corporations have been left with no choice other than engaging in Social Responsibility activities. Also, studies have also shown that organizations, which keep the social wellbeing of their communities at heart, normally turns out to prosper and succeed in meeting their ultimate goals (Kampf, 2007). One such company is Walmart, which now ranks top of the Fortune 500 companies with the revenue income of approximately $482 billion as of June 2016. Some of the social responsibilities policies implemented by Walmart, which has in return helped it reach this far include environmental responsibility and energy efficiency policies among others. This paper shall, therefore, discuss the roles played by these policies towards Walmart success in detail.
Walmart’s CSR Policies on Local Community and Citizens
Among the several social responsibility policies that have been implemented by Walmart Corporation is the women empowerment policy. This system has been attained thanks to Walmart Foundation initiative that aid in providing training and career opportunities for women internationally (Gunther, 2015). Currently, the number of women who have benefited from this initiative globally stands at approximately one million. This initiative has also helped in creating diversity within Walmart entity as 28% of its corporate officers is made up of women. This number has been calculated to be double the amount of women corporate officers in other Fortune 500 companies. With the implementation of this policy, Walmart has succeeded in branding itself as one of the organizations that care about women rights regarding gender equality and diversity.
Besides valuing women economic empowerment, Walmart has also shown that it cares about the local communities and citizens. This can be attributed to its social responsibilities activities such as the creation of microloans facilities, establishing nutrition programs in schools, creating measures to assist with the disaster relief and supporting the locals by aiding them in promoting local farming (University Alliance, 2013). Besides taking part in the above mentioned local social responsibility activities, Walmart has also established community grant program, which awards between $ 250 to $ 2,500 to a local organization with the aim of creating positive impacts on the local people. This initiatives and policies, therefore, indicate that as much as Walmart believes in operating internationally and maximizing its profits, on one hand, it also cares about supporting the local communities through programs that create positive impacts in their lives on the other side.
