Toyota, a Japanese car producing company recalled over 7.5 million vehicles in two major recalls after being ranked as the best quality automobile producer for years. Both Toyota and its dealers lost at least $54 million per day in revenues. The major issue that Toyota was facing was unexplained acceleration. This was the main problem that was putting fear and causing loss of loyal customers at this time.
Descriptive study: Toyota might have chosen this type of research to gain an understanding of the acceleration problem (Sekaran & Bougie, 2016). According to Cooper & Schindler (2014), the company might have used the questions who, what, where, when, and how to establish and explain how the acceleration occurred (21). This marked the starting point for Toyota as the company tried to fight its way back to the top.
Mechanical research: Toyota might have carried out safety research and strategies where 2,274 incidents of sudden acceleration in Toyota were discovered by the safety research firm located in Massachusetts (Liker & Ogden, 2011). The study showed that there was a minimum of 18 fatalities in 275 car crashes since 1999 (Piotrowski & Guyette Jr, 2010). The company started by testing Tundra pickup’s accelerator pedals in 2007 and after a few months, it established that the acceleration was caused by the friction lever of the accelerator.
Reporting study: After performing the descriptive study, Toyota might have gone ahead and performed a reporting study. This research helped Toyota to compare statistics.
