Consider the following scenario and answer the questions (taken from Table 4.2) below.
You are a manager of a large retail outlet and have been employed with the organization for four years. The retail outlet employs approximately one hundred employees and has a number of management roles (Several Assistant Managers, several Managers, two Senior Manager, and a Director). For the last two years, you have been an Assistant Manager and have received what would be considered fair compensation for your role.
Over the last year, you have been asked to take on many of the responsibilities of a Manager, as one of the Senior Managers left the company and your Manager has essentially taken on that role. Your additional duties have caused you some stress and you would like to ask for either a promotion to a management position or, at minimum, additional compensation. You’ve previously expressed your frustrations to your Manager, but have been told that the company simply doesn’t have the ability to make any changes at this time. You have decided to approach your Manager again and ask for a meeting with the management team to discuss your future with the company.
Although you would prefer to take the promotion along with an accompanying pay raise, you are willing to accept a modest pay raise. If neither is agreed to, you have decided to begin looking for work at another organization. A friend of yours has let you know that she would be interested in talking with you about the possibility of taking a management position with her organization. Because of your time with your current company, you would prefer to stay there if possible. As you are a very shrewd negotiator, you have decided to use the Negotiation Planning Guide (Table 4.2) on Page 98 of your text.
Additional information that is useful in answering this question: 1. Your current salary is $44,000 per year. 2. The average salary for a Manager is $54,000 per year and also includes an additional week of Paid Time Off.

The bargaining negotiation is the negotiation in which it becomes necessary to discuss a set of items to find the solution to multiple problems. For quite a long time, I have been working as an assistant manager and receive $44,000 per year. The main issue where negotiation is needed is that I have been taking on the responsibilities of a manager whose salary is up to $54,000 per year along with other benefits (Dullien, 2004, p. 197). During my time in the office, I should not be asked to fulfill the requirements for a manager’s position since it is quite hectic and stressful. I want to continue working here, but the way I am being treated is out of context. I should either be promoted to the senior level or be paid extra for my time, efforts and dedication. If the employer denies making some changes at the moment, I might have to think of other options (Dullien, 2004).
Part 2
As already mentioned, I have been taking on the responsibilities of a manager for some time now. The departure of the senior manager has impacted my professional life to an extent. The bargaining can be done if the employer agrees to either pay me additional or to promote me to the higher level. However, it looks like the company does not want me to increase my salary even though they are in dire need of a senior manager (Gill & Thanassoulis, 2010).

I am interested in becoming a manager in the workplace since I have gained sufficient experience so far and think that my salary must be increased. I am also ready to accept a modest salary raise if the company is not in a position to pay me up to $54,000 per year
(2012).
Part 4
If the company does not promote me to the next level or refuses to increase my salary, my resistance point will be looking for another job where the pay is likely to be better than what I am receiving from the current employer (Dullien, 2004).
