The article “The 9-Year-Old With a Nike Deal” by Ray Smith shows how large corporations are using talented pre-teens to advertise their products and services. Such a young person is Dear Giana, who is 9-years-old and has already landed a deal with Nike Inc. The firm chose Giana to be its brand ambassador after seeing her drawings and creativity in her mother’s Instagram. The young girl has over 22,800 Instagram followers (Smith, 2018). Smith makes it clear that although showcasing and using pre-teens to market products inspires other people, it should not be tolerated. When making deals with big companies, young people might not benefit a lot since they do not understand their value. That is the reason why some firms, such as Gucci, Balenciaga, and Louis Vuitton, has banned advertising deals with young people below 16 years (Smith, 2018). Overall, many companies have realized that young people significantly influence their parents’ choice on what to purchase, and that is the reason why they are searching for influential pre-teens such as Giana.
