Stock Portfolio and the Reasons Why I Chose these Stocks

Essay Instructions:

Each student in this class has $100,000 to create a stock portfolio consisting of 10 to 15 stocks. Students are expected to track the stock weekly using Friday’s closing price and prepare a 5-page summary portfolio analysis paper outlining their stock picks to include why the particular mix of stock was chosen (investment objective) and factors that influenced the change in price over the 10 week tracking period.
Your analysis should be based on your research of the companies you have included in your portfolio to include concepts learned in class and found during your research on the companies. Stocks must be widely held and traded on either the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ.
Keep in mind that your objective: to grow the portfolio’s value and to protect it from a loss. In this regard consider stocks that will provide a well-diversified portfolio. This can be accomplished by investing in a variety of sectors of the country's economy. There is a wide variety of market segments to choose from, for example:
Basic materials, Consumer goods, Financial, Health/Healthcare, industrial goods, property, services, technology, and utilities to name a few. Inside of each of these segments are various industries and companies to choose from.
The project will be graded based on how well you are able to successfully explain why the stocks in your portfolio rose or fell during the semester based on economic factors and other issues affecting performance. Relevant and timely news or research article that affects a stock, stock price, industry or segment should accompany your picks.

Why I Chose these Stocks
In this assignment, I selected ten companies from different sectors of the economy for my portfolio. The reasons for selecting a company varied from one company to another. The following is a report on why each of the ten companies was selected and the factors that led to the loss or gain in stock value after the tracking period.
General Electric Company
With the country slowly recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, I expected that the aviation and motor vehicle industries would continue to grow as many countries are re-opening their borders. This informed my decision to add Gen Electric to my portfolio. However, contrary to my expectations, at the end of the semester, Gen electric shares had slumped by $2.14. One of the factors that led to this decline was the supply chain disruptions reported by the company's management in mid-February. In their press release, the management acknowledged that supply chain disruption had negatively impacted three-quarters of their segments. The management further noted that it expects the problem to persist until June this year. This further pushed the prices down (Singh, 2022).
CVS
The shares of CVS Health dropped by 3.7% during April 2022, alongside the 3.96% drop in the Retail-Wholesale sector shares (Zacks Equity Research, 2022). With this, investors will be expecting CVS to bounce back by May 4, 2022. Based on the mid-point of CVS' management guidance, the company is expected to have a modest +5% growth in the top line and a -2% contraction in non-GAAP earnings per share for FY 2022. More importantly, the company did not peg its forecasts on expected sales related to Covid-19. This was my key driver in adding this stock to my portfolio. At the start of this tracking, the prices were mildly dropping until mid-February, when the company released positive 2021 financial results, recording a sales growth of 8.7% to $292.1 billion. In March, the share prices were further boosted when the company declared a 10% hike in its quarterly dividend (CVShealth, 2022).
Moderna
As 2022 was kicking in, the Covid-19 pandemic was easing. However, I expected that the pandemic would not be suddenly phased out, considering how the virus has evolved into different variants over the past few months. I anticipated that the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine sales would grow at least for Q1, thus earning a position on my portfolio. Just as anticipated, the Moderna sales grew tremendously within the first three months of 2022, leading to the growth of the company's profit to about $3.7 billion compared to $1.2 billion within the same period in 2021. The share price of rice was further catalyzed in March when the company submitted a request to the FDA for its Covid-19 vaccine for babies aged six months to children under 6 (LaFraniere, 2022).
Snap Inc.
The main reason why Snap found its way into my portfolio early this year was news of the company's plans to venture into augmented reality. According to technologists, the metaverse is the next-generation version of the internet. It is a 3D virtual environment that is shared. People may gather in a virtual environment, too, among other things, participate in work activities, play games, or just chat with friends. I regarded this as a fa...
